Bhubaneswar: As Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday asserted that BJP will form the govt in Odisha next month, former Union minister Jairam Ramesh took a jibe at him saying that the former neglected the state by slashing central funding during his tenure.
Taking to ‘X’ (formerly Twitter), Ramesh posted three questions for Modi— “why has Odisha’s central funding steadily decreased, will the PM commit to legal status for the SC-ST sub-plan and will the Sitalapalli wagon factory ever be completed.”
“Odisha has suffered gross neglect at the hands of the Modi Sarkar. In their usual style, the BJP has steadily reduced Odisha’s central funding in recent years. According to CAG reports, central transfers as percentage of revenue receipts have been consistently decreasing from 57 per cent in 2017-18 to 38 per cent in 2021-22,” Ramesh said.
Quoting the CAG finding, the senior Congress leader said Odisha’s share of Union taxes, as a percentage of revenue receipts of the state, has been continuously decreasing from 2018-19 to 2021-22. Grants under recommendation of the Fifteenth Finance Commission have also decreased recently, Ramesh alleged.
According to Ramesh, though the UPA govt had in 2013 sanctioned the Sitapalli rail wagon factory in Ganjam district, its progress is still stuck in limbo. “In September 2021, an official of the East Coast Railway said that the project would be implemented on a PPP model. Till date, however, there has been no progress,” Ramesh said.
Senior BJP leader Samir Mohanty hit back and said Odisha received the highest ever central allocation, including the railways during the Modi regime in the last 10 years than the UPA tenure.
All India Congress Committee (AICC) Odisha in-charge Ajoy Kumar hit out at Modi for his remarks against Congress. In his public address at Berhampur, Modi said ‘BJD is a setting sun and Congress a spent force of non-existent.’ Modi said Odisha gave many years to BJD and Congress, yet the aspirations of people remain unfulfilled. Odisha is looking to the BJP with hope, Modi said.
“The fact is that the BJD is a setting sun and BJP has collapsed. Only the Congress is synonymous with the hope and confidence for the people of the state,” Kumar said.
