MLA urges House to recommend Padma Shri for Koraput composer | Bhubaneswar News

Koraput: Jeypore’s Congress MLA Tara Prasad Bahinipati has urged the state assembly to recommend a posthumous Padma Shri award for late Satya Narayan Adhikari, composer and singer of the viral tribal song ‘Chi chi chi re nani chi‘.
Bahinipati emphasised Adhikari’s immense contribution to popularising tribal music in Koraput region and asserted that Padma Shri, India’s fourth-highest civilian honour, would be a fitting tribute to his legacy.
“The song has garnered over 3 crore views across various social media platforms in the past month, resonating globally. Adhikari, a renowned lawyer, was instrumental in promoting tribal songs of Koraput. He truly deserves the recognition,” Bahinipati said.
Composed in 1991 and recorded in 1992, the song captures the pain of bereavement. On the song’s renewed popularity, Susant, younger brother of Adhikari, expressed joy and support for the award demand.
“This song was already a hit in the tribal belt upon its release, but the social media boom has given it a new lease of life. A Padma Shri for my brother would be a true honour to his contribution to tribal music,” he said.
Susant, who played tabla in the song, also highlighted the overwhelming response the song received on social media platforms.
Adhikari composed and lent his voice to around 80 tribal songs. He also served as the music director for ‘Lubai Dak’ (The Necklace), the first-ever feature film in Koraput tribal language, which was produced by Susant and released in 1994. The film won five state film awards in various categories.
Adhikari, who passed away in 2012 at 57, was an accredited artist of All India Radio, Jeypore. He played a crucial role in establishing a music and dance college in Jeypore.
