SC slams Tamil Nadu governor R N Ravi, declares withheld bills passed; MK Stalin hails verdict as historic

CHENNAI: Chief minister M K Stalin on Monday hailed the Supreme Court judgement against the Tamil Nadu governor as historic. The Supreme Court slammed TN governor R N Ravi saying that Ravi withholding the 10 bills is ‘erroneous in law’.
Speaking in the assembly, Stalin said, “TN has obtained a historical judgement from the Supreme Court. The state assembly sent many of the bills to TN governor R N Ravi after passing them in the assembly for the second time, but the governor did not give assent to them. He was delaying the assent for the bills and was claiming that he has powers. We challenged this in the Supreme Court, and based on our plea, the Supreme Court said that the governor delaying the assent was against the Indian Constitution and all the pending bills will be considered assented.”
Calling the judgement a victory, Stalin said that this is a victory not just for Tamil Nadu but for all the states. “Tamil Nadu has been fighting for its ideology, autonomy in the state, and share in power in the centre. Tamil Nadu will continue to fight and will win,” Stalin said.
Law minister S Regupathy said that the Supreme Court made it clear that all the 10 bills that were withheld by the governor will be considered approved by the governor. The Supreme Court also slammed the governor, saying that he caused hindrance to the state govt.
Though all the parties in the assembly welcomed the judgement, AIADMK and BJP remained mute.
Speaker M Appavu said even the bill to name TN Fisheries University in Nagapattinam was passed for the second time by the DMK govt, and for the sake of it, the AIADMK should have welcomed the Supreme Court judgement.
