Miyawaki Plantation: Miyawaki plantation in Patrapada boosts urban greenery in Bhubaneswar | Bhubaneswar News
Bhubaneswar: The Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Wednesday implemented the Miyawaki method by planting 1,600 plants over 2,000 sq m area at Patrapada here.
The plantation method, invented by Japanese scientist Akira Miyawaki, ensures rapid growth of dense green patches. Three categories of plants grow in three layers — tall, medium and shrub type — to give a feel and look of a forest.
Housing and urban development minister minister Krushna Chandra Mohapatra inaugurated the first Miyawaki plantation patch, flanked by city mayor Sulochana Das and BMC commissioner Rajesh Patil.
After the super cyclone in 1999 and cyclone Fani in 2019, creation of dense urban forests is being taken up for the first time. In both the cyclones, the city had lost close to 2 lakh trees.
“The forest is expected to create new biodiversity and ecosystem which will, in turn, increase soil fertility. We have planted species such as harida, bahada, aonla, bela, jamun, sisoo, karanja, barakoli, mahogany, arjuna, fasi, sitaphal, pestabadam, gambhari, kaith, khira koli, kanchan, ashok, maheshoor queen, swarna champa and naga champa. Herbs like ravolfia, aloevera, bryophyllum, gandhasunthi and wild turmeric have also been planted,” Patil said.
The city forest division has supplied the saplings to BMC and the former also guided it on how to take up the plantation. “Miyawaki plantation will be taken up at multiple locations in future,” Patil added.
