Ministry team visits Puri greenfield airport site

Puri: A four-member team from the Union environment ministry visited Puri on Saturday to review the ground situation for the proposed greenfield airport. The inspection comes as a crucial step towards securing the necessary environmental clearance for the long-pending project.
Out of the total 1,164 acres required for the airport, 68 acres is classified as forest land. The project will commence only after receiving green nod from the ministry. Acquisition of 221 acres of private land has already begun. A public hearing for land acquisition is scheduled in Belpur mouza next week.
The proposed project gained momentum after the issue was raised in both Parliament and assembly. Officials have confirmed that once the acquisition of forest and private land is completed and environmental clearance is granted, construction will begin.
A key meeting was held on Saturday afternoon, involving officials from IDCO, the district administration, and the ministry to discuss further steps.
The first phase of the project, estimated to cost Rs 2,303 crore under public-private partnership mode, aims to handle around 3.5 million passengers annually.
As part of the rehabilitation and resettlement package, each displaced family will receive Rs 5 lakh as displacement allowance, Rs 3.39 lakh for new house construction, Rs 1.13 lakh for transportation and relocation, Rs 54,300 as one-year livelihood assistance, and Rs 25,000 to help set up a shop under business assistance.
