Min asks ULB officials to ensure water supply, heat mitigation measures | Bhubaneswar News

Bhubaneswar: Housing and urban development minister Krushna Chandra Mahapatra conducted a virtual review meeting on Friday to assess the preparedness for summer and issued strict directives to officials of the urban local bodies, focusing on water supply management and heat mitigation measures.
The minister emphasised the immediate activation of dormant tube wells and the establishment of 24×7 control rooms to address drinking water shortages.
The directive came in response to concerns about abnormal temperature increase due to unusual rainfall patterns and irregular weather conditions. Principal secretary Usha Padhee detailed the department’s SOP, which outlines comprehensive measures for urban areas.
The SOP included ensuring prompt repair of water supply infrastructure within 24 hours, deployment of water tankers at strategic locations, and maintenance of tube wells and hand pumps.
Additionally, it called for regular monitoring of heatwave warnings from IMD, installation of water kiosks at public spaces, strict regulation of construction activities to control dust pollution, a ban on burning municipal solid waste, and prohibition of coal use in roadside eateries.
The department also mandated that construction sites must use tarpaulin covers and implement water sprinkling to control dust. Additionally, vehicles transporting construction materials must be fully covered to prevent dust dispersion, the SOP stated.
Environmental conservation measures include the restoration of water bodies and strict enforcement of environmental laws. The meeting was attended by key officials, including municipal administration director Arindam Dakua and commissioners of various municipal corporations.
