Bhubaneswar: State govt has decided to organise an International Millet (Sri Anna) Conference on Nov 10 with an aim to promote traditional food items and crops that are losing importance and for reviving the almost extinct varieties.
A preparatory meeting was held on Tuesday under the chairmanship of deputy CM KV Singh Deo, who holds the agriculture & farmers’ empowerment portfolio.“The event will not only enhance the income of our farmers but also protect our food heritage,” he said.
“From each district, at least one traditional crop, vegetable or fruit will be selected and showcased at the conference. This initiative is expected to increase the demand for the associated produce and bring back more farmers to agriculture,” Singh Deo said.
Agriculture secretary Arabinda Kumar Padhee said a framework would be prepared for successful celebration of the day at the block, district and state levels. A millet service centre will be opened where millet-based food items will be displayed and sold. State govt is offering an 80% subsidy to open the centre. Padhee also emphasised the importance of organic farming and food under the Balabhadra Organic Mission.
