Millennium city ready to put best foot forward for event

Cuttack: As India prepares to welcome its diaspora for Pravasi Bharatiya Divas in Bhubaneswar, the historic city of Cuttack is gearing up to steal some of the spotlight. The millennium city, nestled along the Mahanadi river, is set to dazzle visitors with its spectacular showcase of local art and cultural heritage beginning Wednesday.
Six major tourist destinations have undergone significant renovations to highlight the city’s rich heritage and cultural legacy. “More than 100 delegates have confirmed their participation in a tour of Cuttack. We have made elaborate arrangements, including traditional welcome by local women with flowers and earthen pots at all venues,” said Cuttack collector Dattatraya Bhausaheb Shinde.
Barabati Fort, Silver City Boat Club, Netaji Birth Place Museum, Museum of Justice, and Odisha State Maritime Museum have got facelifts for the occasion. Maniabandha, famous for its handloom products, has also been included in the delegates’ itinerary.
Special attention has been paid to the boat club, where stalls showcasing traditional Odia cuisine and the city’s renowned silver filigree craft have been set up. “This is a unique opportunity to present our rich heritage to the world,” Shinde said.
Besides, Cuttack Municipal Corporation (CMC) has undertaken extensive beautification work, including wall murals, cultural art installations and enhanced waste management systems. “We have mobilised maximum workforce for the city’s transformation through cleaning and beautification drives,” said CMC deputy commissioner Swetapadma Satpathy.
Major thoroughfares leading to the destinations have been decorated with colourful lights and traditional Pipili appliqué lanterns. Museum of Justice features special illumination to emphasise its historical importance, while the Maritime Museum offers an immersive experience of the city’s cultural and maritime heritage.
