Bhubaneswar: With a total asset of Rs 6,500 in hand, a daily labourer is contesting the assembly election from Kantabanji seat in Balangir district against bigwigs like chief minister Naveen Patnaik and sitting Congress MLA Santosh Singh Saluja.
All India Forward Bloc has fielded Abhiram Dharua, 44, from this assembly constituency. He has Rs 5,000 in hand and Rs 1,500 in two of his bank accounts. He is one of the poorest candidates contesting for assembly election in Odisha. He could not complete his high school education as he was travelling with his parents, both migrant workers, to work in brick kilns and agricultural fields. Dharua, 44, a native of Salepada village under Kantabanji police station, is trying to bring change in the lives of migrant workers and daily labourers of his constituency. He was working as a migrant labourer earlier, but now he is looking for work near his native place.
“Everybody knows that people from Kantabanji go outside the state in search of work. Rural migration could not be stopped. I have seen many MLAs in my lifetime but nobody has an answer to this problem. Though I may not win the election, my candidature is a mark of protest on this issue,” said Dharua.
