Metro 3 services resume at Acharya Atre chowk after rain induced disruption

Mumbai: Six days after it was shut due to heavy rainfall and flooding, passenger services at the Acharya Atre Chowk station on Metro Line 3 resumed on Friday afternoon. The Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (MMRCL) restored operations from 1 pm, bringing relief to commuters on the Aarey JVLR-Bandra-Acharya Atre Chowk underground corridor. The station was shut on May 26 after intense rains caused waterlogging inside the under-construction facility, prompting a temporary halt in services as a safety precaution. Since then, MMRCL teams worked on dewatering and system inspections to ensure safe resumption.“All services between Aarey, JVLR and Acharya Atre Chowk will now run as per the regular schedule,” MMRCL said in a statement.Officials attributed the flooding to the collapse of a reinforced concrete cement (RCC) retaining wall at one of the entry/exit points, which allowed rainwater to gush in from a nearby utility trench. The affected section is still under construction and not open to the public. To prevent a repeat of the incident, MMRCL is planning to build a permanent protection wall at Acharya Atre Chowk station. The structure will be designed to withstand extreme weather events.Acharya Atre Chowk, located in Worli, is a key station in Phase 2A of the Aqua Line and caters to office-goers and residents in central Mumbai. The phase from BKC to Acharya Atre Chowk was opened for commuters from May 10.|
