Medical intern injured in clash with hospital staff over food delivery restrictions in Chennai

CHENNAI: A medical intern at ESIC Medical College and Hospital in KK Nagar was injured in a clash with housekeeping and security staff on Thursday night.
MGR Nagar police registered a case and arrested A P Balajeevagan, a housekeeping staff member, who was produced before a magistrate court and remanded in judicial custody on Friday.
Hospital sources said the security and housekeeping staff stopped a food delivery agent from entering the campus at 11.30 pm as it was beyond the “permitted hours.”
Alfred, a medical intern who had ordered the food, argued with the staff outside the men’s hostel. One of the students accompanying Alfred recorded the altercation between Alfred, Balajeevagan, and five other security staff.
Alfred demanded to know who ordered the restriction on late-night food deliveries for students. The argument escalated into a fistfight, during which Balajeevagan assaulted Alfred. Alfred was unavailable for comment.
“Alfred sustained blunt injuries on his shoulder and is being treated at the hospital,” said Hospital Dean Dr. Kalidas Chavan.
“Preliminary inquiries revealed that the intern was beaten. We have terminated the housekeeping and security staff involved. The agencies that employed them have provided copies of the termination letters. We have also filed a police complaint and initiated an internal inquiry into the incident. A three-member committee, headed by the medical superintendent, will investigate the matter,” he added.
The college management had instructed security staff not to allow outsiders, including food delivery agents, onto the campus after 10:30 pm for security reasons, he stated.
Meanwhile, students said the management provided them with copies of the termination letters from two agencies – Urekha Security Agency Private Limited, which dismissed H Anwer Basha, R Durai Raj, S Uthirapathy, N Ramamoorthy, and S Durai, and Alert Security Services, which relieved Balajeevagan due to “administrative reasons.”
