Med officer gets 3-yr RI for graft; later released on bail | Bhubaneswar News

Berhampur: Special vigilance court, Phulbani, in Kandhamal district on Friday sentenced a medical officer to three years of rigorous imprisonment for taking a bribe from an employee at the community health centre (CHC), Phringia, about four years ago.
Judge Samar Bilash Behera also imposed a fine of Rs 5,000 on the convict, Nisith Nisanth Malu. “He would undergo an additional three months of rigorous imprisonment if he failed to pay the fine,” said V Ram Dash, special public prosecutor. “The court convicted the accused after examining 12 witnesses and verifying the relevant documents,” he said.
The convict was working as medical officer in the sub-divisional hospital (SDH), Talcher, in Angul district. He was trapped by vigilance sleuths on March 31, 2021, when he was taking a bribe of Rs 7,000 from an employee of the Phiringia CMC, where he was working as in-charge of the hospital. The complaint alleged Malu took the bribe to clear his bills.
“The court, however, accepted his bail application and released him,” said Dash.
