MEA asks govt to upgrade airport infra for Pravasi Divas event

Bhubaneswar: The ministry of external affairs (MEA) asked the state govt to upgrade facilities at Biju Patnaik International Airport ahead of the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas event, scheduled from January 8 to 10 at Janata Maidan, anticipating increased air traffic and VIP movement. Accordingly, the state commerce and transport department wrote to the ministry of civil aviation for increasing the frequency of flights to Bhubaneswar from major airports in the country and abroad during the event.
According to govt sources, MEA’s recommendations include expanding check-in facilities and enlarging arrival and departure lounges to handle passenger volumes effectively. “The ministry emphasised installing additional security checkpoints, with increased CISF and police presence to facilitate quicker screening. They advised boosting staff numbers across airline operations, security and ground handling services. We, along with the airport authorities, are complying with recommendations,” a senior govt officer told TOI.
The MEA laid stress on establishing an exclusive parking area for delegates’ vehicles and setting up a control centre to monitor vehicular movement. The ministry sought professional porter services and temporary refreshment lounges with experienced catering staff.
A dedicated reception team was requested to greet delegates, alongside an enhanced traffic management system to facilitate smooth vehicular movement at terminal entry and exit points, govt sources said.
The tourism department received instructions to enhance the airport’s visual appeal by incorporating regional artistic elements that showcase Odisha’s vibrant cultural heritage.
“The MEA highlighted the importance of specialised staff training in passenger assistance and baggage handling. They requested development of a new operational coordination application and establishment of an exclusive business lounge for premium delegates attending the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas,” the govt officer said.
Other recommendations include adding more security checkpoints to the existing two gates to reduce queueing time. The ministry also proposed additional airline counters and increased seating near boarding areas to accommodate the higher passenger numbers.
“These recommendations were discussed during a review meeting chaired by chief minister Mohan Majhi. We will leave no stone unturned for improving the airport’s infrastructure and capacity to accommodate international delegates during this prestigious event,” the govt officer said.
