Tribals storm police stn for activist’s release

Koraput: Over 500 tribals armed with traditional weapons laid siege to Kashipur police station in Rayagada district on Thursday, demanding release of anti-mining activist Kartik Nayak.
The protesters, carrying placards and shouting anti-mining slogans, stormed the police station in protest against the alleged proposed bauxite mining in the Sijamali hills.They burnt tyres on the premises.
Nayak, a campaigner against mining, was arrested on a non-bailable warrant. His detention triggered the unrest, with tribal leaders asserting that their protest was aimed at stopping what they view as environmentally destructive mining practices.
According to a senior police officer, additional forces were deployed in the area to control the situation. “The protesters who had gheraoed the police station have been pacified, and the situation is under control,” said the official, requesting anonymity.
