BENGALURU: A massive fire broke out at a godown of a lubricant oil company on the outskirts of Bengaluru in the early hours of Tuesday. According to officials, no casualties were reported.Around 12 fire tenders were pressed into operation. The incident occurred at the godown named ‘MDS Oil’ near the Nelamangala Regional Transport Office (RTO) on Tumakuru Road. According to the jurisdictional Madanayakanahalli police, the incident was reported to them around 3 am by a passerby who noticed thick smoke visible from the godown. The police alerted the fire and emergency services from the Nelamangala fire station. After the firemen reached the spot, they found the fire had already spread to the entire godown and summoned additional fire tenders from Peenya, Yeshwanthpura, and Tumakuru fire stations. Six bowsers, three water tankers, an aerial ladder platform, and a fog tanker, along with the state disaster response force (SDRF), are part of the dousing operation.A senior officer said that, prima facie, it appears the fire broke out due to a short circuit. A huge quantity of oil was stored in the godown, which is spread over 30,000 square feet. The loss is estimated to be in crores. It is reported that the oil belonged to a private oil industry corporation (Shell). The godown belonged to the son-in-law of a former minister of the state.Since it is oil, the fire spread rapidly, and the thick smoke impacted the visibility of the fire tenders, initially resulting in a tough time fighting the fire. The police are yet to receive an official complaint about the incident. The employees working in the godown finish their work by 7.30 pm, and it is locked after that, reopening the next morning. So there were no people inside the godown, a senior officer said. The fire has come under control, but it will take a couple more hours to douse it completely, the officer added.
