Berhampur: District and sessions court, Ganjam, on Monday sentenced a 34-year-old man to life imprisonment for bludgeoning his lover to death and looting her gold and silver ornaments in Aug last year.
“District and sessions judge, Rupashree Choudhury, awarded life imprisonment to mason Mithun Bisoi of Sindurpur, after recording the statements of 17 witnesses. The court also imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 on the accused,” said Trilochan Parida, public prosecutor.
Sources said the convict stoned Sangeeta Pradhan (26) of Podamari to death on Aug 3 after promising to marry her and took her gold and silver ornaments, worth over Rs 2 lakh, before dumping her body near Taptapani. Mithun developed a relationship with Sangeeta over some months, after she was deserted by her husband.
Following a complaint by the deceased’s father, Narayan Pradhan, police arrested Bisoi on Aug 8 after recovering the body. The stolen ornaments were recovered from Dharampur, near the convict’s village, where he had buried them, sources said.
