Married woman and live-in partner arrested for killing her father in Andheri

Mumbai: A 37-year-old married woman and her live-in partner were arrested on Thursday for killing her 58-year-old father in Andheri (East) a day before. The deceased, Shankar Kamble, had opposed the extra-marital affair. The woman, Sonali Bait, and her lover, Mahesh Pandey, were arrested on the basis of a complaint filed by the son of the victim. The police at first arrested Pandey and later detained the victim’s daughter, who had gone into hiding after her father’s killing.Kamble was a housekeeping worker. His son, Rahul (28), said in the complaint that Kamble had warned Bait against having an affair when she was married with two children. “Her father frequently opposed their relationship, which allegedly led Sonali and her boyfriend to assault him with their bare hands, resulting in his death,” a police officer said. The officer said that Bait had married in 2008 and left her husband and children in 2022 to live with Pandey. She had a 17-year-old daughter and a 13-year-old son.“Sonali fell in love with Mahesh Pandey, and since 2022, the two have been in a live-in relationship. Since then, she has had no contact with her father, brother, husband, and children,” the officer said.On June 8, while her father was at work, Bait and her lover arrived there. In the complaint, the victim’s son Rahul said: “During an argument about their relationship, her boyfriend allegedly slapped my father. The next day, my father called her home. When she arrived, another altercation broke out between them. The matter escalated to the police station, where the police also summoned her boyfriend. At the police station, Mahesh accused me of attempted theft. However, the police realised he was lying and warned both Sonali and Mahesh not to get into further arguments with her father and brother and let them go.”On June 11, Kamble went to work as usual. Around 5.20 pm, he called his son and told him that Bait and Pandey had beaten him on the Andheri-Kurla Road and continued to argue with him. “Rahul rushed to the spot, where Sonali and Mahesh also began to argue with him and beat him. When Mahesh was assaulting Rahul, the victim tried to intervene. At that moment, Mahesh allegedly punched Shankar hard in the chest, causing him to collapse and lose consciousness. Rahul, with the help of bystanders, rushed his father to a nearby private hospital. The doctors there recommended shifting him to Rajawadi Hospital in Ghatkopar East. After examination, the doctors at Rajawadi declared Shankar Kamble dead at 6.20 pm,” a police officer said.Kamble’s wife passed away in 2020. Bait’s husband worked in a private company.
