Marriage Scam: Police seek Dubai help in marriage scam case investigation | Bhubaneswar News
Bhubaneswar: A day after Satyajit Managobind Samal was arrested for duping several women of lakhs of rupees after getting in touch with them on matrimonial sites, Bhubaneswar police are planning to take help from their counterparts in Dubai to ascertain the motive behind his frequent visits to the Gulf country.
“We will take him on remand to uncover the motive behind him flying to Dubai frequently. We suspect there might be more to his frequent trips than what meets the eye. If required, we may seek help from Dubai police to gather information,” commissioner of police Sanjeeb Panda said.
Thirty-four-year-old Samal had fled to Dubai after duping his victims. He was lured by the police — as part of their ‘Dulhe Raja’ operation — to return to Odisha to meet a woman. Police took the help of a woman officer who posed as a prospective bride on a matrimonial site and contacted Samal. He was subsequently arrested.
Samal, a native of Jajpur district, had affairs with 49 women, most of whom were divorcees or widows, from states like West Bengal, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Punjab and Rajasthan, as well as Odisha, and even married a few of them before duping them.
Police hope to gather crucial information that could shed light on the case and help them understand the full extent of Samal’s actions. As the investigation progresses, the city police said their priority will be to provide justice to the women who fell into his trap. “We will bring Samal on remand for questioning. Simultaneously, we have started contacting the victims to record their testimonies. We would advise them to lodge complaints against him and help us gather more evidence so that he is convicted after trial,” Panda added. Since Samal got to know these women through matrimonial sites, police have decided to contact the online matchmaking companies to know more about him. “We will write to all matrimonial sites, seeking information about Samal. Site users should properly verify credentials of prospective grooms and brides on online platforms before reposing faith in them,” DCP Prateek Singh said.
