Berhampur: Mangrove plants known to shield coastal areas from damage during cyclones will be planted for the first time in Ganjam district next month.
Around 15,000 mangroves will be planted on six hectares near Purunabandh, a village located near the mouth of river Rushikulya under Khallikote range of Berhampur forest division.
“It will be executed by the forest department under United Nation Development Programme (UNDP)-funded the Enhancing Climate Resilience of Indias Coastal Communities (ECRICC) project,” said Sunny Khokkar, divisional forest officer (DFO), Berhampur-cum-nodal officer of the project The Rs 33-crore project is being implemented in 33 panchayats in Chikiti, Rangeilunda, Khallikote and Ganjam blocks to increase climate resilience of coastal communities, particularly fishermen.
Different departments, including agriculture, horticulture, fisheries and animal resources development, watershed are involved in the implementation of ECRICC project. The aim behind taking up mangrove plantation on an experimental basis is to reduce the impact of cyclones and arrest soil erosion.
