Bhubaneswar: State govt is planning to set up mandis in every district and increase production to check price rise of essential food items like vegetables. “We had a very fruitful discussion with traders’ associations who gave valuable suggestions to address price rise and improve production. After considering the proposals, the govt will take steps in a phased manner,” food supplies and consumer welfare minister Krushna Chandra Patra told the media after the meeting.
“As Odisha depends upon other states to meet 90% of its requirement of essential items, govt must take steps for long-term solution to the problem of price rise. We suggested the govt to provide financial and infrastructural support like cold storage and irrigation facilities to farmers to take up cultivation of green vegetables, pulses and oilseeds,” said Sudhakar Panda, secretary, Odisha Byabasayee Sangha.
Odisha produces 137 lakh tonnes of food grains every year out of which 117 lakh tonnes is paddy and rest 20 lakh tonnes includes pulses, oil seeds and vegetables.tnn
