Rourkela: A man allegedly tried to kill his 19-year-old son by setting his room on fire at Talabahali village in Bonai sub-division of Sundargarh district. Dasrath Bhumij sustained severe burn injuries and is currently undergoing treatment at Rourkela Government Hospital (RGH). The accused, Samara Bhumij (40), and his second wife Rambhadevi (33), are on the run.
According to the police, the incident occurred around 1 am on March 15 when Samara, in an inebriated state, became enraged after his son questioned his drinking habits. Later, when Dasrath went to his room, his father allegedly poured petrol through the gap in the door and set the room on fire.
Despite Dasrath’s pleas for help, Samara and his wife reportedly refused to open the door. Dasrath managed to contact his friends who rescued him and took him to Bonai sub-divisional hospital. He was later shifted to RGH.
“We have registered a case against the accused and his second wife for attempted murder,” said Monalisha Mohanty, sub-inspector of Lahunipada police station. The case was filed following a complaint by Pabitra Bhumij, the accused’s younger brother and uncle of the victim.
Samara, whose his first wife died 11 years back, used to live with his second wife and two sons from his previous marriage.
