Man, son get 10-yr jail for chopping off villager’s hands | Bhubaneswar News
Kendrapada: A court in Jajpur district on Saturday sentenced a father and son to 10 years of imprisonment for chopping off both hands of a man in a brutal attack eight years ago.
Chief judicial magistrate-cum-assistant sessions judge Sarbeswar Das found Harekrushna Baral (67) and his son Tapan Baral (35) guilty under Section 326 of IPC for voluntarily causing grievous hurt with dangerous weapons.
The court also imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 on each convict, failure to pay which would result in an additional year of imprisonment.
The incident took place on Aug 10, 2016, when the victim, Bikash Lenka (28) of Rahamba village under Kuakhia police station limits, was returning home from a nearby market. The convicts, taking revenge over past enmity, attacked Lenka with sharp weapons, severing both his hands.
Public prosecutor Biraja Prasad Parida told reporters that the court’s verdict was based on testimonies from 12 witnesses, including the victim, and medical reports. “The evidence presented was conclusive in establishing the guilt of both accused,” said Parida.
