Sambalpur: An elderly man was allegedly beaten to death by his 25-year-old nephew for making obscene comments about his wife during a wedding ceremony in Deogarh district’s Malehipada village, police said Friday.
The incident occurred on Wednesday, two days after the marriage ceremony of the deceased’s granddaughter, but the family filed a police complaint only on Friday.
Police said the deceased, Fakira Mohan Dharua (62), who was allegedly drunk, made inappropriate remarks about the wife of his nephew, Krushna Chandra Kumura. Upon learning from his wife about the incident, an enraged Kumura confronted Dharua, who had hidden behind a neighbour’s house. Kumura allegedly attacked his uncle with a bamboo baton, causing fatal injuries to his head and chest.
“The deceased had a history of alcohol addiction and making inappropriate remarks about women and others,” said inspector Satyabrata Rout of Reamal police station. After the incident, Kumura fled to his village, Pandulishila.
The body remained unattended for two days as the family waited for Dharua’s son to return from another village, where he had gone to see off wedding guests. Police have detained Kumura and will formally arrest him on Saturday.
Further investigation is on, police said.
