Man held for smuggling 1.6kg gold from Bangkok – The Times of India

Mumbai: The Customs at the Mumbai international airport detained a young couple which arrived from Bangkok allegedly carrying gold dust weighing 1.6 kg valued at Rs 1.25 crore. On the request from the man, the agency on humanitarian grounds arrested the man and allowed his wife to walk away with their three kids.
Mohammad Wasif Shaikh (26) and his wife were intercepted at Terminal 2 on suspicion. Upon questioning, they denied carrying any dutiable or contraband goods. However, a personal search and X-ray screening revealed that the man had concealed 24-karat gold dust in wax inside hi rectum and given part of it to his wife. Shaikh admitted to smuggling the gold in exchange for Rs 40,000, allegedly promised by a person named Ali Bhai.The court remanded Shaikh to judicial custody, his advocate Vijay Advani said. tnn
