Berhampur: Police in Ganjam district on Sunday claimed to have solved a rape and murder case of a four-year-old girl by arresting the perpetrator within 48 hours of the crime. The 27-year-old accused is a distant relative of the child.
Police said the accused allegedly watched porn before he lured the child by offering chocolates. He then raped her in an under-construction anganwadi centre. When the girl protested, he smothered her to death. After killing her, he dumped the body inside the building, police said.
The girl, who belonged to a nearby village, had come to her paternal uncle’s house along with her mother for a festival. The girl went missing on Friday evening, when her mother went with others to attend the festival. Family members of the girl lodged a missing case when they could not locate her after a search.
Villagers found her body early on Saturday and informed the police. Police registered a case and started investigation by pressing a forensic team and dog squad at the spot. Senior police officers, including SP (Ganjam) Subhendu Kumar Patra, visited the crime scene.
“The accused was identified during interrogation and later confessed to the crime. Watching porn might have led him to commit such a heinous crime,” the SP said. After he raped and killed the child, he consumed liquor twice, police said.
Congress MLA Ramesh Chandra Jena urged the police to file a chargesheet soon so that the accused would get quick and exemplary punishment. On Saturday, he visited the house of the deceased and consoled her family members.
