Man held for duping woman of Rs 4.70L with job promise | Bhubaneswar News
Rourkela: A 34-year-old man was arrested here on Thursday night for allegedly duping a woman of Rs 4.70 lakh with the promise of providing her a manager’s job in Odisha State Road Transport Corporation (OSRTC).
The accused was identified as Prakash Basa, a resident of Sundarpada, Bhubaneswar. Police said Basa, a counsellor with a private coaching institute, had come in contact with Sumitra Singhdeo (36) of Jagda here in Nov 2022 when she and her husband met him about their daughter’s online coaching.
Basa kept in touch with the couple and one day told Sumitra that a manager’s post in OSRTC was vacant and he had contacts through whom she could get the job. Basa said that around Rs 15 lakh was being demanded for the post, but he could arrange it for Rs 5 lakh. Sumitra discussed the proposal with her husband and agreed to it. Sumitra and her husband arranged the money by taking a loan. As per Basa’s instructions, Sumitra sent a total of Rs 4.70 lakh to his account in different phases from Nov 2023 to Feb 2024.
Sumitra then repeatedly asked him about the job, but Basa made various excuses. Whenever he answered Sumitra’s calls, he assured her she would get the job. When Sumitra realised that Basa had cheated her, she lodged a complaint at Jhirpani police station in Sept 2024.
A three-member team from Jhirpani police station, headed by inspector Manohar Pradhan, along with Sumitra and her husband went to Bhubaneswar three days ago. With the support of Airfield police, the team nabbed the accused from his rented quarters in Bhubaneswar and brought him to Rourkela. Jhirpani police arrested him on Thursday night after interrogating him.
“We are further investigating the case,” said Pradhan.
