Man gets 20 years in jail for raping 6-yr-old | Bhubaneswar News

Berhampur: The special court for the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Pocso) Act in Berhampur on Monday sentenced a 20-year-old man to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment for raping a six-year-old girl in Ganjam district two years ago.
Pranati Pattnaik, additional district judge-cum-judge of the special court, also imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 on the convict. “The accused will serve an additional two years in jail if he fails to pay the fine,” said Narayan Panda, a special public prosecutor.
Panda added that the judgment was based on the statements of 12 witnesses, including police officers, doctors, and medical reports. The court, however, acquitted the mother of the convict, who was also implicated in the case by the police due to lack of evidence. She was accused of threatening the girl’s parents.
According to sources, the incident occurred on June 28, 2023, when the convict forcibly took the girl to the roof of his house and raped her. The girl’s mother lodged an FIR on July 3, 2023. During the investigation, police arrested the accused and his mother. The convict remained in jail throughout the trial, as the court repeatedly denied his bail pleas, said Panda.
