Kendrapada: A local court on Friday sentenced a 25-year-old man to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment for raping a 15-year-old girl in Kendrapada district and making her pregnant. The incident occurred two years ago when the girl was a Class IX student.
Judge Tribikram Keshari Chinhara also imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 on the convict. Failure to pay the fine would result in an additional year of imprisonment.
The court also directed the Odisha State Legal Services Authority (OSLSA) to provide a compensation of Rs 4 lakh to the survivor under the victim compensation scheme.
The crime came to light when the girl’s mother noticed physical changes in her daughter and filed an FIR on Aug 12, 2023. According to the complaint, the accused, who was a neighbour, had raped her daughter multiple times, resulting in her pregnancy.
Special public prosecutor Manoj Kumar Sahu said the verdict was based on testimonies from 10 witnesses, including the girl, and medical reports. The accused was charged under IPC sections 376 (rape) and 506 (criminal intimidation), along with Section 6 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Pocso) Act, 2012.
The girl, who gave birth to a daughter last year, had initially kept the crime secret after the accused threatened her not to reveal he was the father.
