Man beaten to death over weapon display at wedding | Patna News – Times of India

Ara: A quarrel over the brandishing of a weapon at a wedding ceremony in Kulhariya village under the Koilwar police station area of Bhojpur district snowballed into a violent clash, leading to the death of a 30-year-old man, a civil service aspirant, on Wednesday night. The deceased, Santosh Kumar, son of one Vijay Kumar Rai and a resident of Chhotki Sonadiya village, was brutally thrashed and later succumbed to his injuries at Ara Sadar Hospital.
Santosh had attended the wedding of his friend and co-villager, Vikki, when tensions flared during the “jaimala” ceremony. A youth from the bride’s side had brandished a weapon while dancing, which drew objections from both the bride’s and groom’s families. While the issue was temporarily resolved, it took a violent turn during dinner.
“Although the matter was sorted out at that time, a group of boys from the bride’s village later came with sticks and started beating the baratis (people from the groom’s side) during dinner,” said Mantu, a close friend of the deceased, who witnessed the attack.
Another friend of the deceased, Vinay Kumar, said, “We all ran helter-skelter to save ourselves when youths attacked us with sticks. However, Santosh lagged behind. We tried calling him on his cellphone, but there was no response. Initially, we assumed he had managed to escape to his village. Later, we were informed that he was found badly injured in a drain, about 100 metres away from the bride’s house,” he said.
Koilwar police rushed Santosh to Ara Sadar Hospital, but he succumbed to his injuries during treatment.
SHO of Koilwar police station, Narottam Chandra, said an FIR was registered based on the statement of Santosh’s brother. “We have filed an FIR against unknown people in connection with the incident. Raids are being conducted to arrest the attackers,” the SHO said.
