Man arrested for murdering 70-year-old in Sundargarh

Rourkela: A 35-year-old man was arrested for allegedly axing an elderly person to death in Sundargarh district’s Bobeimohan Girjatoli area on Wednesday morning.
The accused, identified as Surendra Soronia, killed 70-year-old Silvanu Dungdung outside his residence in Sahajabhal village when the latter had gone to buy vegetables around 9 am.
Police said Dungdung visited Soronia’s house to buy vegetables. After paying Rs 50 to Soronia’s father for the vegetables, Dungdung was attacked with an axe by the accused, striking him on the head and neck, killing him on the spot.
The murder came to light when the victim’s son, Xavier, learned about the incident around 12:30 pm and filed a complaint at Raiboga police station. “I found my father’s body lying in front of Soronia’s house,” Xavier stated.
Inspector in-charge of Raiboga police station, P K Pradhan, said, “During interrogation, Soronia cited previous enmity with the victim for killing him. He had allegedly warned Dungdung earlier not to visit his house.”
Police have recovered the murder weapon and launched further investigation to determine the exact motive.
