Man arrested for beating wife to death | Bhubaneswar News

Rourkela: A 32-year-old man was arrested on Friday for allegedly beating his wife to death in Pitagaon village in Sundargarh district, police said.
The accused, Jagannath Toppo, allegedly killed his wife Monika (31) following an argument over mortgaging their land on March 4. The incident occurred when Toppo, who had recently mortgaged his land for Rs 7,000, returned home in an inebriated state.
Police said when Monika questioned him about the mortgage and his absence from work, Toppo became enraged and repeatedly struck her with a wooden stick. Despite her critical condition, he didn’t seek medical help. Monika succumbed to her injuries around 11 am the next day.
“We received information about the incident through reliable sources on March 6,” said Sabita Patra, inspector in-charge of Chandiposh police station. A police team, along with forensic experts, visited the crime scene and recovered the victim’s body and the weapon used in the crime.
The couple, who had married 14 years ago, has two sons aged 11 and 7. While their elder son studies at a govt residential school, the younger one lives with his aunt.
Based on an FIR lodged by the victim’s elder sister, police arrested Toppo, who later confessed to the crime during interrogation. “We have arrested the accused and further investigation is underway,” the IIC added.
The victim’s body was handed over to her family on Thursday after post-mortem.
