Malabar Hill residents want ‘no parking’ rules withdrawn | Mumbai News – The Times of India

Mumbai: Many residents of the upscale Malabar Hill area in South Mumbai have once again demanded withdrawal of the ‘no parking’ notification on several roads in the area. They argue that most of them live in decades-old buildings that lack adequate parking spaces. Cabinet minister and local MLA Mangal Prabhat Lodha too on March 23, wrote to traffic police, demanding they permit residents to park on streets.
In his letter Lodha has said, “Malabar Hill Assembly Constituency covers an area of 14.50sqkm, where many residential colonies lack adequate parking space. This results in hardships for residents who struggle to find legal parking zones. We request the traffic department to review and consider lifting the “No Parking” restrictions in Walkeshwar Road, J Mehta Marg, Manav Mandir road and Ridge Road.”
Local resident Prakash Munshi said it’s only since last two years that parking has been restricted and requested the traffic police to allow 24-hour parking on one side of B G Kher Marg, stressing on the hardship it causes residents, especially senior citizens.
When contacted, traffic police officials said these areas fall in a high security zone and parking will continue to be prohibited here. “The no-parking notifications for these roads are not new. In the past too, we have received requests, but it cannot be done. Vehicles of ministers and VIPs ply on these routes Secondly, there is bound to be traffic congestion if on-street parking is permitted,” said a senior police official. —
