Sambalpur: Excise sleuths on Tuesday apprehended a drug trafficker with 140 grams of brown sugar, valued at Rs 14 lakh. The 36-year-old trafficker was nabbed from Sunapali area under Dhanupali police station limits in Sambalpur.
He was identified as Sheikh Sabir of Sunapali. According to excise officials, the accused, with one of his associates, was coming from Kolkata carrying the brown sugar on a train on Monday night.
Acting on a tip-off, the excise personnel also boarded the same train and kept track of Sabir. When the train slowed down near Fatak in Sambalpur town, the accused, sensing the presence of the officials, jumped down to flee.
The excise personnel were aware of the his movement and had stationed their officials in the Sunapali area the entire night. When Sabir returned home around 7 am on Tuesday, the excise personnel nabbed him. The other accused, however, managed to flee.
Asit Kumar Mallick, deputy superintendent of police (excise), said, “They both went to Kolkata to bring brown sugar. They mostly take 5 gm of brown sugar and make 40 to 50 sachets of it, selling each for Rs 400 to Rs 500. They are history-sheeters. The raw drugs are available cheaper in Kolkata. They bought it for Rs 1 lakh there and sold it in other markets at higher prices.”
