Chennai: A statewide bike-theft racket was busted by Chennai police which arrested three people, including two key suspects involved in more than 200 bike thefts in Chennai, Coimbatore, Tiruchi, and Madurai. The arrests were made by the Choolaimedu police on Saturday.
One suspect, Rasool Moideen, 49, of KK Nagar, stole the bikes, targeting only Passion Pro and Splendour Plus models, as these bikes could be accessed using any keys.He handed them over to one J Prashanth, 31, of Ayyappanthangal, who, sold the stolen bikes to scrap dealers in Pudupet. Police seized three stolen bikes from the suspects.
A complainant, Sheik Mohammad, 35, a resident of Choolaimedu, found his parked bike missing near his house on December 30 last year. After the cops registered a case and reviewed the CCTV camera footage, they tracked the movements of the suspects.
The team apprehended Rasool Moideen, K Idayathullah, 34, of Pudupet, and Prashanth. An investigation officer said, “Rasool worked at a bangle manufacturing unit in Mumbai when he came in contact with a few bike thieves.” Rasool was involved in 15 bike theft cases.
While he returned to Chennai 10 years ago, the bike thieves introduced him to a few bike thief agents who received the stolen bikes and trained him in the technical know-how to steal the bikes. Rasool was earlier arrested by the Coimbatore police.
The arrested trio was produced before a magistrate and remanded in judicial custody.
