Majhi counters Cong claims, says crimes against women have gone down in BJP regime

Bhubaneswar: Chief minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Monday asserted that crimes against women declined after he took charge in June last year. “A white paper on crimes, that will be published soon, will make things clear. While crimes against women have gone down, the govt has been ensuring quick and accelerated action against the culprits. They are being sent to jails in the judicial process,” the CM told media persons.
The CM was responding to Odisha Pradesh Congress Committee president Bhakta Charan Das’s allegation of a spurt in crimes against women. Das on Saturday expressed concern, stating that more than 1,600 cases of crimes against women were registered during the past eight months, including 54 cases of rape. Highlighting the three recent incidents of school students getting pregnant, Das questioned where the state is headed.
The CM emphasized that his ‘people’s govt’ takes strict action against those who commit crimes against women, marking a departure from past practices. “The perpetrators are promptly arrested and placed in judicial custody. They undergo legal proceedings and the govt ensures their prosecution to secure appropriate punishment through the judicial system,” he said.
“In its bid to revive its fate in the state, Congress has come out with baseless allegations. Vidhan Sabha is in session. They should discuss all issues through Question Hour, Adjournment Motion, and during Zero Hour. We are ready for discussions. Ours is not a govt that would cut short session mid-way,” Majhi added.
The budget session, which began on Feb 13, is on a mid-term break from Feb 22 to March 5. It will resume on March 6 and continue till April 5. Sources said the home department will place the white paper during the ongoing session.
