Mumbai: The Mahayuti govt welcomed PM Narendra Modi govt’s decision to carry out a caste census, with chief minister Devendra Fadnavis describing it as a historic one.
“It will set a new precedent in social justice. It will provide accurate empirical data which will enable govt schemes to reach the real deserving people. Those who are backward will get justice,” said Fadanvis.
Hitting out at past govt, especially the Congress, Fadnavis added: “This is the first time after 1931 that caste census was conducted. Successive Cong govts opposed caste census and did not allow it to be conducted. In 2011, late PM Manmohan Singh announced a caste census, but under party pressure backed down and only did a SEBC survey, but never disclosed the figures. Congress has only done politics on the issue.
Deputy CM Eknath Shinde said the initiative would pave the way for inclusive and data-driven policymaking, ensuring the equitable distribution of resources among all communities, especially the underprivileged. He noted the significance of the decision being announced on the eve of Maharashtra Day, calling it a tribute to the state’s spirit of harmony.
Deputy CM Ajit Pawar said the census will dismantle the caste system in future. “The decision on caste-based census will accelerate the goal of achieving social equality. It is a significant and revolutionary step by the Modi govt towards social equality,” he said.
The opposition also welcomed the decision. State Congress chief Harshwardhan Sapkal, however, noted that the move should not remain a campaign issue and should be implemented immediately. He demanded that the Centre consider removing the 50% cap on reservations. He sarcastically suggested that the post of Sarsanghchalak (RSS chief) be given to someone from the OBC community. He added that the demand for a caste-wise census is valid, especially as various communities across the country are demanding reservation. “Had this decision not been taken, it could have led to unrest in society”.
NCP (SP) leader Supriya Sule, in a post on X, stated, “This decision will shed new light on the exact number of various castes in the country and their status.” She added that for many years, her party had been demanding a caste-wise census through various platforms, including Parliament. tnn & agencies
