Maharashtra's first national Lok Adalat of 2025 resolves over 7 lakh cases, recovers Rs 42 crore

MUMBAI: The first National Lok Adalat held in Maharashtra in 2025 on Saturday disposed of over 7 lakh cases. The Adalat, held across the state under the guidance of Chief Justice Alok Aradhe, recovered over Rs 42 crore in over 5 lakh traffic e-challan cases where notices were only sent online.

Over 5.2 lakh pre-litigation cases were settled, and nearly 2 lakh post-litigation cases, including those pending in courts, were resolved, said the Maharashtra State Legal Services Authority. Justice A. S. Chandurkar, Executive Chairman of MSLSA, oversaw the Lok Adalat organised in 3 High Court Legal Services Committees, 34 District Legal Services Authorities (DLSAs), and 305 Taluka Legal Services Committees.
Motor accident claim petitions, bank recovery claims, criminal compoundable offences, matrimonial disputes, dishonour of cheques cases, cases relating to electricity and telephone bills, and traffic police e-challan cases were the mainstay of this National Lok Adalat, said M S Azmi, head of MSLSA, and deputy secretary S A Deshpande. In one case from Pune, Rs 2.65 crore was handed out as a closing settlement in a traffic accident case, and Rs 2 crore in a Mumbai MACT case, ending a possible long-drawn legal battle.
The alternate dispute resolution method is a legally effective way to get final closure in disputes and a win-win, as the parties get a refund of the entire court fees when matters are settled in a Lok Adalat, said MSLSA. The next Lok Adalat will be on May 10.
