Maharashtra police commits to strengthening child-friendly policing | Mumbai News – The Times of India

MUMBAI: Maharashtra Police, in collaboration with UNICEF Maharashtra, has launched a comprehensive training programme for Special Juvenile Police Units (SJPUs) to enhance child-centric policing practices across the state.
The initiative, introduced at Sahyadri State Guest House, Mumbai, aims to strengthen the capacity of police personnel working with SJPUs in implementing key legislation, including the Juvenile Justice Act, POCSO Act, and the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act.
Former Director General of Police, Maharashtra, A. N. Roy, highlighted the importance of protecting children through existing laws and awareness. Additional Director General of Police, Ms Aswati Dorje, described child-friendly policing as a moral obligation, while UNICEF Maharashtra’s Chief Field Officer, Sanjay Singh, stressed the importance of prevention in child protection.
The training addressed challenges such as limited capacities and gaps in understanding juvenile justice principles. It focused on child rights, protection mechanisms, and the practical aspects of relevant laws, particularly concerning Children in Conflict with the Law and Children in Need of Care and Protection.
The programme featured interactive sessions, including presentations, panel discussions, case studies, and role-playing exercises. Various stakeholders from child protection authorities and law enforcement participated in the event.
The launch of this Child-Friendly Policing Initiative marks a significant step towards creating a robust support system for vulnerable children, ensuring they receive care, dignity, and justice within the law enforcement framework.
