MUMBAI: In an administrative overhaul aimed at strengthening Mumbai’s intelligence and security framework, the Maharashtra government has officially abolished the post of “Special Police Commissioner” in the rank of Additional Police Superintendent. This decision comes as part of broader police reforms under the newly enacted National Police (Reforms) Act, 2023.As part of the restructuring, the post previously titled “Special Police Commissioner” has been demoted in rank to “Special Police Inspector” but will carry the new designation of “Joint Commissioner of Police, Intelligence.”The newly designated Joint Commissioner will report to the Commissioner of Police, Greater Mumbai, and will oversee all intelligence-related functions in the city.Citing Mumbai’s strategic and economic importance—as well as its heightened exposure to security threats—the government emphasised the urgent need to reinforce its intelligence infrastructure. With numerous high-security installations and a high volume of visits from national and international dignitaries, Mumbai remains a prime focus for security vigilance.The government order outlines the rationale behind the change, pointing to the critical need for constant surveillance on intelligence-sensitive areas and tighter monitoring of the city’s multiple entry and exit points.This move, according to the official government notification, is expected to streamline command structures and enhance intelligence gathering and threat response capabilities.
