Maharashtra government allocates Rs 13.46 crore for 26/11 hero Tukaram Omble memorial | Mumbai News – The Times of India

NEW DELHI: The Maharashtra government has sanctioned Rs 13.46 crore for constructing a memorial in honor of Ashok Chakra awardee and 26/11 hero Tukaram Omble.
The memorial construction will take place in Kedambe village of Satara district, where he was born.
The Rural Development Department issued a government order on March 28, 2025, confirming previous decisions on funding allocation.
The order mentions, “In accordance with government decision number Smarak-2022/P.No.131/Yojana-11, an administrative approval of Rs 13,46,34,201 has been granted for the construction of the memorial for Ashok Chakra awardee Shaheed Tukaram Omble at his birthplace, Mauje Kedambe, Jaoli, District Satara.”
The state’s scheme “Establishment of Memorials for Great Personalities in Rural Areas” is funding this project. The order specifies, “For the financial year 2024-25, 20% of the sanctioned amount, i.e., Rs 2,70,00,000, is being released under budget head 2515-2486 to initiate construction work.”
Tukaram Omble received India’s highest peacetime gallantry award, the Ashok Chakra, posthumously for his valiant service as a Mumbai Police sub-inspector during the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks.
During the night of November 26, 2008, Omble’s brave actions led to the capture of terrorist Ajmal Kasab. Despite being equipped with only a baton, he confronted the armed terrorist, enabling security forces to apprehend Kasab, though Omble sacrificed his life in this endeavour.
In a recent development, Tahawwur Rana, accused in the 26/11 case, has submitted a request to US Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts to prevent his extradition to India, following Justice Elena Kagan’s rejection of his review petition earlier this month.
The US Supreme Court website indicates that the judges will discuss the application during a conference on April 4, 2025. Rana has submitted a fresh application seeking to halt his extradition to India.
His appeal states, “Petitioner Tahawwar Rana has renewed his Emergency Application for Stay Pending Litigation of Petition for Writ of Habeas Corpus previously addressed to Justice Kagan and requests that the renewed application be directed to Chief Justice Roberts, according to the order published on the US Supreme Court’s website.”
