Rourkela: A 61-year-old retired railway employee from Nagpur died while travelling on the Pune-Howrah Azad Hind Express, with his family alleging negligence by onboard staff in providing timely medical assistance.Pramod Eknath Gawande was travelling with his wife, Seema, and their 10-year-old daughter in the A2 coach when he developed health complications near Rajgangpur station in Sundargarh district on Sunday night. According to his wife, despite repeatedly requesting help from the TTE (travelling ticket examiner), no immediate medical assistance was provided.“If my husband had received timely treatment, he could have survived,” said a grieving Seema. She claimed that even during the train’s 10-minute halt at Rourkela station, no medical help was arranged.Gawande was pronounced dead when the train reached Chakradharpur around 1:30 am on Monday. His body was taken to the railway hospital, where doctors confirmed he had suffered a heart attack. Govt Railway Police (GRP) recovered the body, which was later handed over to the family after post-mortem.A K Choudhury, senior divisional commercial manager, Chakradharpur, denied allegations of negligence. “The TTE took immediate action upon learning about the passenger’s condition near Bondamunda. Two medical interns on the train attended to him, and arrangements were made for medical assistance at Chakradharpur station,” said Choudhury.Railway authorities have assured a further inquiry if the family files a formal complaint regarding the incident.
