Maha Kumbh 2025: Maintain hygiene and stay well-clothed during Kalpwas, says doctor

PRAYAGRAJ: As the Sangam city gears up to host millions of devotees for the Maha Kumbh, the biting cold wave is proving difficult for devotees. The dry and chilly air impacts the respiratory system, increasing the risks for those attending the holy gathering.
In this backdrop, TOI talks to an expert in the field and Head of the Pulmonary Medicine Department at Motilal Nehru Medical College, Dr Amitabh Das Shukla, regarding what precautions the devotees must take to avoid falling ill, especially during their month-long Kalpwas on the banks of the river Ganga during these chilly conditions.

Moreover, doctors are concerned about devotees coming from central and southern parts of the country as there is a sharp difference in temperature, making them more vulnerable to catching a cold, which, if untreated, converts into a severe problem of bronchitis.
According to Dr Shukla, “During Maha Kumbh, devotees should not only focus on taking a holy dip at the sacred Sangam but also pay special attention to their health, particularly the elderly and those suffering from conditions like asthma, bronchitis, or other respiratory diseases.”
The expert medico said, “Wear masks, as this will not only shield you from cold but will also keep you safe from infections amidst the crowd.
“He suggested that one should keep their neck and chest well-covered to avoid exposure to cold. In addition to this, use hand sanitisers and maintain hygiene in the crowded pilgrimage area, such as Maha Kumbh, he said. “Consume warm beverages,” said Dr Shukla.
