Lights, camera, Koraput: Odisha’s emerging film destination | Bhubaneswar News

Koraput: Renowned for its rolling hills, misty mornings, dense forests, and pristine streams, Koraput has long been a paradise for nature lovers. Now, this picturesque district in Odisha is rapidly gaining recognition as a sought-after filming location, attracting major production houses and filmmakers from across the country.
Last year, a big-budget multilingual film starring south Indian superstar Anushka Shetty was extensively shot across Koraput. The film crew made use of stunning locations in Deomali, Jeypore, Lamataput, and Kolab to capture the district’s breathtaking landscapes.
Further cementing its cinematic appeal, acclaimed filmmaker SS Rajamouli’s production house has secured permission to shoot a major feature film in Koraput from Mar 1 to 28. The film, featuring south Indian superstar Mahesh Babu and Bollywood icon Priyanka Chopra, will be filmed in and around Deomali and other scenic spots in the district.
“The beauty of Koraput, its climate, and attractive locations drew us to this wonderful place. We are hopeful of shooting a significant portion of our film here,” said Naga Pranit, production manager of Rajamouli’s production house, speaking to TOI.
Koraput has also become a favoured destination for regional filmmakers, serving as the backdrop for around five Odia film projects in the past year. “Koraput’s changing beauty with every season makes it a dream location for filmmakers,” said Odia film director Pradeep Kumar Sahu, who recently shot a movie in the district. He also credited the cooperation of the local people and administration for making the filming experience seamless.
Ollywood actor Upasana Bhadra Mohanty, who has filmed two movies in Koraput, echoed similar sentiments. “The landscape here offers myriad options for capturing breathtaking scenes and evoking a sense of cinematic wonder,” she said.
Recognising Koraput’s potential as a filmmaking hotspot, local authorities have actively promoted its scenic locales to production houses. “We ensure the required administrative support for production teams to ensure a hassle-free filming experience,” said Koraput Collector Keerthi Vasan V.
Beyond its cinematic appeal, Koraput’s growing prominence as a filming destination has positively impacted the local economy. According to sources, the influx of film crews has generated employment opportunities for residents, with many locals working as extras, guides, and logistical support staff. The district’s rise as a filming hotspot has also bolstered tourism.
