Lightning strikes kill woman, injure 7

Bhubaneswar: A 45-year-old woman died and seven others sustained injuries in lightning strikes in Puri on Monday. All of them were working in a paddy field when lightning struck them during heavy rain and thunderstorm in Puri.
The deceased was identified as Kunti Bhoi of Chaitana Bhoi Sahi in Puri. She, along with the injured persons, was rushed to hospital, where Kunti was declared as dead.The condition of the injured persons is stable, sources said.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Monday issued a yellow warning for heavy rain in 18 districts on Tuesday and stated there will be scattered rainfall in most parts of the state from Aug 13 to 18.
“A cyclonic circulation lies over Jharkhand and its neighbourhood and another cyclonic circulation over east Bangladesh and its neighbourhood. The monsoon trough at mean sea level now passes through Bikaner, Sikar, Gwalior, Sidhi, Ranchi, Digha and then it will move towards east-southeastwards to the northeast Bay of Bengal,” the IMD bulletin stated.
In view of the heavy rain warning in 18 districts on Tuesday, the special relief commissioner has asked the collectors to stay alert for any untoward situation. The 18 districts are Bhadrak, Balasore, Mayurbhanj, Kendrapada, Jajpur, Keonjhar, Sundargarh, Deogarh, Angul, Sambalpur, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Subarnapur, Balangir, Nuapada, Kalahandi, Nabarangpur and Koraput.
The state has not recorded major rainfall in the last couple of days. On Monday, Talcher recorded a maximum rainfall of 32 mm, followed by 14.6 mm in Baripada and 13 mm in Balasore.
Since June 1 till Aug 12, the state has recorded a cumulative rainfall of 634.9 mm against the normal rainfall of 698.4 mm. As many as 10 districts have rainfall deficit during the period.

A cloudburst in Lahaul and Spiti on August 1 worsened the situation. Officials urged caution for residents and tourists.
