Bhubaneswar: Days after returning from parole, a prisoner serving life term for murder was found hanging from a tree on the Choudwar jail premises in Cuttack on Saturday morning.The deceased was identified as Bishnu Prasad Swain (28).Prison staff rushed Swain to SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack, where doctors declared him brought dead.Swain, a resident of Tangi in Cuttack district, was sentenced to life imprisonment in Jan for killing a man in 2021 over previous enmity. He was granted parole recently to attend his mother’s funeral rites on May 11 and returned a few days ago.Sources said Swain had met his estranged wife when he went home and the two got into an argument. The dispute, which allegedly concerned their daughter, may have contributed to his mental stress, the sources said.“Initial investigations suggest psychological distress as the primary cause for suicide. The deceased appeared troubled following his return from parole,” said a prison officer. The incident has raised questions about the circumstances leading to Swain’s death, with prison authorities and villagers pointing to emotional trauma as a possible trigger.Authorities have launched an investigation into the incident.
