Law courses most preferred for PG admissions at Patna University | Patna News – Times of India

Patna: If the number of applications received for admission to the postgraduate courses of Patna University (PU) in the current academic session (2024-25) is any indicator, law is the most preferred subject for the aspirants. The last date for online submission of applications ended on Saturday.
According to the PU sources, both the LLM and LLB courses have received the maximum number of applications this year. While a total of 1,603 candidates have applied for the admission to 120 seats in LLB course, 285 applications have been received for the admission to 20 seats in LLM. Both these courses run from Patna Law College and the basic qualification for admission to LLB is graduation.

The popularity of law courses notwithstanding, PU is unable to increase the number of seats owing to the Bar Council of India (BCI) restrictions. Earlier, Patna Law College used to have as many as 300 seats in LLB course, but a few years back the intake was reduced to 120 on the recommendation of the BCI.
Patna Law College principal Vani Bhushan told TOI that a team of BCI recently inspected the college to consider the institution’s request for enhancing the strength of students and it is expected that PU will get a favourable nod from the BCI. “If a positive response is received from the regulatory body soon, the number of seats might be increased from the current session itself,” said the principal.
The Master of Education (MEd) course, running at the PU’s department of education, seems to be the next most popular professional course as it has attracted altogether 253 candidates. There are only 50 seats in this course. Admission to the two-year BEd course is made through a state-level combined BEd entrance test. There are two BEd colleges under PU—Patna Training College and Women’s Training College.
Other popular subjects at the PG level are commerce, zoology, political science, history, English, chemistry, mathematics and physics, said PU’s dean of students’ welfare Anil Kumar.
As many as 397 candidates have applied for 200 seats in commerce and 355 applications have been received for 40 seats in M Sc zoology course. The number of applications received for the admission in political science, history and English are 254, 240 and 201 against 82, 120 and 70 seats, respectively. The number of applications received for the admission in chemistry, mathematics and physics are 184, 182 and 164 against 64, 60 and 50 seats respectively, he said.
However, there is very little rush for admission in most language courses in PU. Except English and Hindi, all other language courses have failed to attract an appreciable number of candidates. The number of applications received in many of these courses is much less than the number of sanctioned seats. For instance, only one application has been received against 20 seats in Bengali.
