Mumbai: The sessions court granted anticipatory bail to two senior executives of private companies, Ramesh Subbarayudu Katigandla and Ram Anand Suryawanshi, in connection with the Kurla BEST bus accident, which resulted in nine casualties and 37 injuries.
The 51st Magistrate court previously questioned the Kurla police, during the filing of the chargesheet, as to why these two accused were not arrested while only the driver, Sanjay More, was taken into custody. Immediately after the police named these two executives as accomplices in the chargesheet, they, through their lawyer Suvarna Avhad Vast, moved the sessions court seeking anticipatory bail. Sessions court judge S R Navander granted bail to the two private contractors, Ramesh Subbarayudu Katigandla and Ram Anand Suryawanshi, on certain conditions. The two executives were accused of ignoring safety protocols and manipulating ITMS records to assign BEST bus driver More a duty shift without proper verifications.
The court’s order specifies that if the accused are arrested, they will be released on bail upon furnishing a personal bond of Rs 25,000 each with one surety of the same amount. The court also directed that the accused shall not tamper with evidence and must cooperate with investigation. They should not threaten or influence witnesses, and they should not leave the country without the court’s permission. Applicants shall furnish two documents as proof of their residence with their active phone numbers to the concerned police station within seven days from this order. A violation of these conditions may result in the cancellation of bail.
On Feb 11, police filed a chargesheet against driver More, director of Inway Trans Private Ltd Ramesh Katigandla (35), and CEO of Mourya Trans India Private Limited Ram Anand Suryawanshi (34), as the primary accused. More, who was behind the wheel of the bus, has been charged with culpable homicide, endangering public safety, and reckless driving.
