Kolab Reservoir: Kolab Reservoir Sluice Gate Opens Amid Rising Water Levels in Koraput |
Koraput: The upper kolab head works (UKHW) division of the irrigation department opened one sluice gate of the Kolab reservoir on Saturday after water levels surged due to continuous rainfall. By 8 am on Saturday, the water level had reached 857.15 meters, just below the full capacity of 858 meters.
“One of the 11 sluice gates was opened at 3 pm to release floodwater and ensure the reservoir’s safety.There was a potential risk of the water level breaching its full capacity,” said Koraput collector Keerthi Vasan V. Officials noted a sharp rise in water levels since the rainfall began on Sept 1.
Authorities had earlier announced the planned release of water on Friday, advising residents living downstream of the Kolab river and along its banks to remain vigilant. Residents were also warned to avoid entering the river, as the release poses risks to human life and livestock.
