Kin hope for fair probe into Bibhas death

Berhampur: Bibhas Nayak, who was flung to death in a canal in Karnataka’s Koppal district while trying to save two women from rape, was an MBA graduate working in a managerial position in the HR department of St Stephen’s Hospital, New Delhi, for more than one year. His family are hoping for a fair investigation into the incident.
Hailing from Derabadi village in Kandhamal district, 29-year-old Bibhas was the son of B K Nayak, moderator of the Church of North India (CNI) Synod and bishop of Agra Diocese. He has an elder sister, Bonhomie Nayak. His parents reside in Agra.
Bibhas had done his schooling from Stewart School, Bhubaneswar before he moved to Chennai for higher studies. Bibhas studied BBA in Madras Chrisian College, Chennai, and completed his MBA from a Mumbai institute, his cousin Firoz Pradhan said. “He had last visited Kandhamal around three months ago. A travel enthusiast, he had travelled to many states on his bicycle,” said Firoz, who does business in Odisha.
Bibhas, who was unmarried, was visiting Karnataka and had befriended the victims during his stay there, family sources said.
The incident occurred on March 6 night when a group of four tourists — Bibhas, an Israeli woman traveller, two men from USA and Maharashtra — along with their female homestay operator were stargazing. While the two male companions swam to safety, Bibhas drowned. Karnataka police recovered his body on Saturday.
Known for being a devoted man, Bibhas was widely respected in the community. Colleagues and friends remembered him as a God-fearing, humble individual with a gentle spirit and compassionate heart.
“Bibash was not just a leader’s son; he was a true embodiment of Christian values,” said a church member who knew him well. His commitment to serving others was evident in his professional life.
His sudden passing has left a deep void in both his family and the broader community.
The funeral of Bibhas was performed on Sunday at G Udayagiri in Kandhamal district, following religious traditions, after the body arrived by ambulance.
“We can only pray that such incidents never happen again,” said Akash Paul, brother-in-law of the deceased.
“We are all in shock. While we’re unaware of the progress of investigation by Karnataka police, we hope justice will be served,” said Firoj Pradhan, a relative. The family plans to hold a mass prayer meeting soon. “Family members will decide on further course of action after discussions with relatives,” Pradhan added.
Karnataka police have arrested all three accused in the gang rape and murder case.
