Key ‘conspirator’ in police volunteer’s murder arrested | Bhubaneswar News
Bhubaneswar: A 62-year-old woman was arrested by Mancheswar police here on Sunday for allegedly masterminding the brutal killing of police volunteer Sahadeb Nayak (36) on the Rasulgarh flyover on Jan 8. Police identified the accused as Rama Nayak.
Police said that Rama, who was evading arrest, surrendered in the morning. With this, total arrests in the case have now reached seven.
Police said that both Rama and Nayak were residents of Kedarpalli slum under Capital police station jurisdiction. Motive behind Sahadeb’s killing was attributed to previous hostility, police sources said.
DCP Pinak Mishra said that the accused and the deceased had ongoing conflicts over various minor slum-related matters, including physical altercations and brown sugar trafficking. “Rama is the key conspirator who connived with six other accused, currently in judicial custody, to kill Sahadeb as retaliation for their previous disputes. Possible complicity of some other suspects is being investigated,” Mishra said.
The DCP assured that Mancheswar police will submit the case chargesheet in court soon. “Though we planned to submit the chargesheet within 30 days from the date of the crime’s occurrence, it was not possible as some of the suspects were on the run,” Mishra said.
Prior to her surrender, Rama released a short video message, claiming innocence. “I have been falsely framed in the murder case. I have no link with the deceased,” she said.
The deceased’s wife, Sunita, said Rama and others ganged up and killed her husband. “My husband was opposing their illicit activities, particularly brown sugar trafficking in the locality. If Rama claimed to be innocent, why did she run away? Police should arrest her two sons as well. My husband was helping the police to nab drug peddlers and other criminals in our locality,” Sunita said.
